The Slate transports Thai residents on a journey through time

Art-inspired resort in northwest Phuket offers insights into its tin mining heritage and Bill Bensley’s industrial interior design concept with a rewarding new package and immersive tour program by the resort’s “Slate Storytellers”

Are you seeking an intimate yet immersive escape from the outside world – the opportunity to get away from it all and stimulate your senses? The Slate, the whimsical art-inspired beachfront resort in Phuket, is inviting Thai residents to discover southern Thailand’s diverse heritage with an intriguing package that blends luxurious stays, compelling storytelling, and engaging activities.

Phuket, Thailand’s most popular tourist destination, may not seem like the obvious setting for a cultural retreat. But visitors who scratch beneath the surface of this holiday hotspot will unearth a rich seam of interwoven tales and legends, influenced by the island’s tin mining past. Thai nationals and ex-pats who book The Slate’s “Value By Design” package will be transported on a multi-sensory journey from the bygone era to the present day, with a completely private three-day, two-night stay enhanced by enticing culinary experiences, local area explorations, and an expert-led onsite tour into the hotel’s design, art, and heritage.

Managed by the in-house “Slate Storytellers”, this new onsite one-hour tour will take guests on an enthralling adventure through time, highlighting Bill Bensley’s unique interiors and the hotel’s artworks, while retracing the steps of our southern Thai ancestors and revealing how a pristine island jewel in the Andaman Sea became a vibrant industrial center, and later evolved into one of the world’s most desirable destinations.

There can be few better places to uncover Phuket’s history than The Slate; the property’s owner, Krystal Prakaikaew Na-Ranong (known to her friends as “Khun Moo”), is deeply passionate about the island and her personal narrative is interwoven with the local area. Her family was early settlers, having migrated to the region from Fujian province in southeast China, and her father, Wichit Na-Ranong, is credited with putting Phuket on the world tourism map.

After World War II, the family has gifted a parcel of land as a reward for their loyalty. Having donated plots to build new schools, they decided to use the last 35 acres of beachfront land to create The Slate, allowing everyone to experience Phuket’s fascinating past and bright future. Khun Moo is now inviting Thai and ex-pat visitors to awaken their senses and explore community-orientated initiatives. For example, The Slate has already showcased the skills of one of Thailand’s most famous traditional tattoo artists, and its “Artist in Residence” program empowers talented young artists to exhibit their work. Guests can also unwind with authentic activities such as yoga and Muay Thai boxing.

ow available until 31st January 2021, the “Value By Design” package includes a choice of accommodation in The Slate’s luxurious rooms, suites, or pool villas, signature welcome drinks upon arrival, daily breakfast for two at the Tin Mine, one complimentary lunch at the Underground Café, and one couple’s dinner at Tin Mine or Black Ginger, a breath-taking Thai restaurant that was recommended by the 2020 Michelin Guide. Guests will also enjoy the new storytelling tour, private roundtrip airport transfers, priority early check-in and late check-out (subject to availability), complimentary shuttle services to Central Floresta and Patong, one day of free car rental, and attractive discounts at all onsite restaurants, bars, the Coqoon Spa, and at Stockroom, the world of avant-garde widgets.

For families, up to two children (aged seven and under) can stay free-of-charge, including daily breakfast. Guests staying in the D-Buk Family Suite will also receive one kid’s lunch at the Underground Café and one dinner at the Tin Mine or Black Ginger, from the Little Miner’s menu (when dining with their parents). And naturally, Wi-Fi is free-of-charge throughout the entire stay.

This package starts from just THB 9,900 net for two nights in a Pearl Bed Suite, THB 12,600 net for a Private Pool Suite, or THB 34,500 net in a One-Bedroom Villa. Thai residents who sign up for the “Rao Teaw Duay Kan” promotion will enjoy additional discounts. Book now for stays taken by the end of January 2021.

Nestled in the pristine northwest corner of Phuket, surrounded by Sirinat National Park and just 15 minutes drive from Phuket Airport, The Slate is perfectly positioned for Thai travelers who want to escape the city and lose themselves in a wonderful world of history, gastronomy, and wellness. It is little wonder that this enchanting retreat was recently named as one of the world’s best resorts in the Condé Nast Traveler 2020 Readers’ Choice Awards.
